Heres what CricBuzz says about him.
If the pressure of being Sunil Gavaskar's son wasn't enough, Rohan was named after the famous West Indian batsman, Rohan Kanhai, But unlike his father, who was known for his water-tight defences, Rohan was an aggressive left-handed batsman, who'd ably double up as a left-arm orthodox spinner.
Starting off his First Class career in the late 1990s, he soon realized how crowded the Mumbai Ranji side was with very strong competition and made the move to Bengal. With a healthy amount of runs with an average of over 50 and a couple of seasons of staying on the fringes of national selection, he finally got into India's ODI squad when they toured Australia for the VB series in 2003-04.
With only a few chances to bat, with pretty average returns, he was expectedly left out of the subsequent tour to Pakistan. He came back briefly for the 2004 Champions Trophy, but a couple of poor performances out there saw him take the axe. In 2007 he jumped ship to join the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) and turned up for the Bengal Tigers.
He returned to the BCCI fold in 2009, was signed up for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2010 season, but soon tapered off. Having retired, he remains one of the more prominent voices in commentary, especially on the domestic circuit.

Heres what ESPNcricinfo says about him.
Rohan Gavaskar may forever have to bear the mark of being the not-so-famous son of a famous father. Sunil Gavaskar's near-impeccable technique and rock-steady temperament have not echoed in Rohan perhaps as much as he would have liked. His left-handed batting is more attacking - and vulnerable - than his father's, and he bowls a slow, gentle left-arm spin that has picked up crucial
wickets at times for Bengal. His first-class average keeps him forever on the fringes of higher honours, and he was a serious contender for a national one-day slot for quite a while before he finally got his chance, against Australia in the 2003-04 VB Series. Dropped for the subsequent tour to Pakistan, he was given another lifeline at the start of the 2004-05 season. Appointed captain of Bengal in 2001-02, he had two poor seasons as leader.
Rohan decided to join the rebel Indian Cricket League in its inaugural season in 2007, representing the Kolkata Tigers. He was one among the 71 players granted amnesty by the BCCI in June 2009, marking his return to the official fold.
