Heres what CricBuzz says about him.
Azhar started off his international career with a bang when he scored a century on his Test debut against England in 1984 at Eden Gardens Calcutta, 3 years after he made his first class debut for Hyderabad. He went on to score centuries in the next 2 Tests as well and is one of the few cricketers who has the unique distinction of getting a hundred in each of his first three Tests. Azhar was heralded as a batting genius and this opinion grew stronger when he thumped his way to an aggressive 120 against England at Lord’s in 1990. This was the Test where Gooch had pummeled the Indian bowlers all over to bring up his 333 and India were faced with the prospect of a follow on when Azhar came in to bat at number 5. Against a quality bowling attack, he brought up his hundred of just 87 balls and although India lost the match, it would have been far worse if not for Azhar’s knock. Predominantly a middle order batsman, he was known for his attacking brand of cricket irrespective of the situation of the game and his superb catching in the the slip cordon and outfield. Indeed at the time of his forced retirement, he was arguably India’s best fielder, even at the age of 37. Although his technique against the short ball was a bit dodgy, he resorted to instinctive stroke-play to counter it.
The second phase of Azhar’s career came when he replaced Srikkanth as the captain of the Indian squad for the tour to New Zealand in February 1990. He went on to lead India in ODIs and Tests for the the major part of the 90s and till date, is statistically India’s most successful captain. He won 103 ODI matches and 14 Tests as captain, with Ganguly being the only Indian skipper to better the latter's record. His tactic of using spinners on tailor-made home pitches, especially Anil Kumble, was one of the major reasons for the successful ODI record.
The final and probably, the life-defining phase of his cricketing career, ended in public disgraces. Towards the end of his career , in 2000, Azharuddin was accused of match-fixing after South African captain Hansie Cronje, in his confession for match-fixing, indicated that Azharuddin had introduced him to some bookies. India's premier investigating agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation & published a damning report on the state of affairs in world cricket which included names of prominent Indian cricketers, amongst which Azhar’s was on the top. Despite pleading innocence, the BCCI banned him from the game of cricket for life in 2000. He joined the Congress party on Feb 19, 2009 and successfully contested a general election from the Moradabad constituency in Western Uttar Pradesh.
Facts:
1) Azhar played 99 Tests and scored a hundred in his first and last Test, much like Greg Chappell, with whom he was compared to on account of his wristy stroke-play
2) He held the record for the fastest hundred, maximum runs and most catches in ODIs. All the three records have been broken.
3) He has scored 5 hundreds at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, at a whopping average of 107.50
4) He was at his prolific best against England, against whom he has 1278 Test runs at an average of 58 with 6 hundreds and Sri Lanka, against whom he has 1215 runs at an average of 55 with 5 hundreds.
5) His highest Test score of 199 came against Sri Lanka at Green Park, Kanpur in 1985. He was adjudged LBW off the bowling of Ravi Ratnayeke.
6) His younger son Ayazuddin died in September 2011 in a freak bike accident.
7) Harsha Bhogle has authored a book which chronicles his life. The book is titled ‘Azhar’

Heres what ESPNcricinfo says about him.
Those who saw this supreme batting artist at his peak will never forget him - sinewy wrists transforming a slender piece of willow into a magician's wand. Azhar's leg-side play was reminiscent of Zaheer Abbas and Greg Chappell - a Michelangelo in the midst of housepainters. In later years, he expanded his off-side repertoire, and conjured some of the finest innings played in the modern era - his 121 at Lord's in 1990 was one for the gods. His technique was suspect against the short stuff, a deficiency he sought to overcome through instinctive strokeplay, sometimes with cavalier disregard for the team situation. As captain, Azhar enjoyed tremendous success on made-to-order home pitches, while right to the end of his career he was peerless in the field, whether prowling the covers or pouching catches at slip. He announced his arrival, against England in 1984-85, with three hundreds in his first three Tests, a feat that has never been match, while his last Test innings also bore him a hundred. But then allegations of match-fixing provided an emphatic full stop. That he finished his career with 99 Tests is perhaps appropriate for one who came within a whisker of batting immortality - only to throw it all away at close of play. He appealed against the life ban in the courts but the verdict is still awaited. He made his foray into politics by joining the Congress party in 2009.
